Chaos Magick Practitioner Wolff on Practicing Magick

Chaos Magick is All Around You

There are two major groups of magical practice in our modern era: stage magic – like you see in Vegas and Chaos Magick – which is often done in private and has the authentic intention of making a change in your life.

Belief as a tool
Chaos magic theory says that belief is an active magical force. It emphasizes flexibility of belief and the ability to consciously choose one’s beliefs, hoping to apply belief as a tool rather than seeing it as a relatively unchanging part of one’s personality.[10] Various psychological techniques are employed in order to induce flexibility of belief.[11] Other chaos magicians suggest that people do not need belief to work magic.[12] Austin Osman Spare asserts in The Book of Pleasure and various other works that will formulates desire which promulgates belief.

Advertising works like Magick

But sometimes Chaos Magick is employed (wittingly or unwittingly) in the public space through advertising and marketing. This isn’t because advertisers and marketers are all secretly practicing magicians. It is because the basic principles of the work are the same – to create a shift in consciousness in accordance with will to change the individual a the subconscious level and alter their behavior.

Equally, corporate logos are distilled and abstracted through a form of sigilisation to imply dynamism, progression, strength, power. The Nike swoosh tells us nothing about what Nike do as a company, yet we would all recognise it and its sense of athletic agility. The McDonald’s logo is no longer simply an M, it is a pair of golden arches leading to somewhere better.

Introducing the Chaoist

Joshua “Wolff” Armstrong is a practicing Chaos magician from the Detroit Area. He is one half of the  duo Fox and Wolff, a chaos ritual performance group that fuses real magic with entertainment. And I got to talk with him for an hour or so about what chaos magic is, how it works, and why someone might want to employ this kind of magic in their life. The topics strayed from magic into skin care and tattoos as unscripted conversations have a tendency to. He is a man of many talents, and magic is just one of them.

Some Topics Discussed:

  • What is magic?
  • Do you practice chaos magic already without even knowing it?
  • Similarities between chaos ritual and the art of our ancient ancestors
  • The role of the subconscious in magically directing the power of will
  • Chaos magic in the advertising industry
  • Choosing your first tattoo
